I travel a lot for this job. Or it just feels this way.
Back in AP I also travelled pretty frequently. But since AP is tight on budget and every trip takes like 5 management signatures, when we got an approval we maximize the use of it. Meaning, don't come back until you solve every single problem you need to solve, for yourself or your team, in that particular country. So it was 3 weeks in Four Seasons here or 5 weeks in Grand Hyatt there, still traveling, but more like working vacations where you don't pay for it. And with the global standard daily meal allowance of 100 USD, you can party like there is no tomorrow with all these third world countries we go to.
Maybe it was the AP luxury hotels. Maybe it was the 20 min taxi ride to the airport as compared to my 2hr-and-3-changeover train ride now. Back then it didn't feel so bad. And we also travel in pairs so there is always someone to hang out with when exploring the strange new city or do stupid things with.
When I signed up for this job, it had a standard foot note of "20% of travel expected". Right. So that will be like 2 to 3 trips per year to trade show or fairs after management approval? I can totally handle it.
Now I looked at it again, 20% looks low but it actually translates into 1 day on the road per week!
Once again sucking in math has came back and haunt me, successfully.
It's funny how time flies when I am home and I never got time for chores, but when I travel I am already bored to death by 8pm. Believe me I tried. I always bring chores with me when I travel too so now I am running out of things to iron or sew the buttons back on. I even work every night just to kill time. And I can only surf THAT many internet sites per day for amusement.
Then I found this.
My flight statistics from Swiss Air. Amazing, isn't it? (bear with me, I've been traveling for 4 days straight and I am very bored)
According to this, I've made 21 flights so far (I still need 1 more return flight back to Zurich from here), and that's nearly 60,000 km in distance. And luckily, only very short air time compared to the crew and only 15% of the distance to the moon.
Two weeks ago I told my boss this is my last trip before year end. Five minutes ago I just asked the secretary to book me for another 3 trips before mid December.
Maybe, by then I will have covered 20% of the distance to the Moon. Ah, never underestimate the 20%!!
